Acne Treatments: Over the Counter Vs. Prescription Strength
When it comes to acne treatments, every company that offers
them swears to have the answer. Simply rub this cream on your face, or wash
your face with this soap, or use this pad, or wear this mask, and your acne
will clear up. If these companies all have the answer, then why does acne even
exist at all? The fact is, acne does exist and certain products only work for
some people. That’s why you have to gauge how bad your problem is to find the
solution that works best for you. The general rule is that, if your problem is
only slight, then over the counter products may very well work for you. If your
problem is more severe, then prescription acne treatments may be your only bet.
One Or Two Pimples
If you are only experiencing a pimple here or there, or if
you are merely getting some redness, then you should go to the grocery store or
pharmacy and try one of the over the counter acne treatments. There are many
creams, ointments, soaps, pads and more to choose from, so you can pick your
promise or your guarantee, but know that most of these products contain the
same ingredients. These will generally get rid of most small acne problems. If
these acne treatments fail to get rid of your acne, however, or if the problem
becomes worse, then it may be time to try something a little more drastic.
See Your Dermatologist
Your dermatologist should only be seen as a last resort, as
many prescription strength acne treatments will affect your kidneys and can
lead to long term health problems. They can get rid of severe acne problems,
however, and for that reason, they’re usually well received by many acne sufferers.
Your dermatologist will determine if you are eligible for one of these
prescription medications, such as Acutane or Retin-A, which have been proven to
clear up many forms of severe acne.
In conclusion, all of those creams and ointments you see at
the store will work, but only for certain cases. If your acne is less severe,
then try one or all of these acne treatments to clear up your acne. If your
problems are more severe, however, then it might be time to make an appointment
with your dermatologist. The most important thing to remember is that if your
acne goes untreated, you could develop scars. This makes clearing up your acne
important as you don’t want to be reminded that you once had acne for the rest
of your life.
